The overflow answering service for the calls that arrive at once

Calls do not arrive evenly. They arrive three at a time, usually while you are already on one, and the second and third callers hear ringing until they give up. Overflow cover means those calls are answered properly instead of being lost to a busy signal — without changing how you answer the phone yourself.

Type your business name and hear it answer a call in your name. No card needed. It reads your website first, so it already knows your services and hours.

Redline Plumbing, after-hours line — what's happening?

Caller

There's water everywhere, under the kitchen sink, it's spraying out.

Answerley

Okay. First thing — there should be a shutoff valve under the sink, on the pipe going to the tap. Can you turn that clockwise as far as it goes?

Caller

Hang on — okay, yeah, it's stopping. It's slowing right down.

Answerley

Good, that's the important part done. If it doesn't stop completely, your main shutoff is usually where the water line enters the house, often near the meter or in the basement. What's the address there?

Caller

27 Halloway Street.

Answerley

27 Halloway Street. Is water sitting on the floor now, and is any of it near outlets or the panel?

Caller

It's all over the kitchen floor but no, nothing near any outlets.

Answerley

That's good. This is an emergency call-out, so I'm putting you through to our on-call plumber now rather than taking a message. He'll give you a time. Stay with me one second.

A call answered on the first ring while the main line was busy. Only the agent is voiced — the caller is an invented example, shown as text.

The problem

The calls you never know you missed

A ring-out leaves no trace

A missed call at least shows up. A caller who hangs up after six rings does not appear anywhere, so the problem is invisible until you wonder why enquiries are down.

Busy periods are exactly when the calls are worth most

The hour after a storm, the morning after a freeze — the calls arriving at once are the ones you would most want.

Hiring for the peak is not proportionate

You cannot staff for the busiest hour of the year, and you should not have to.

How it works

How overflow is set up

  1. 1

You forward on busy, or on no-answer

Both are standard settings on your existing line. Your number stays your number and you keep answering it yourself.

  2. 2

It picks up the calls you could not

The second and third callers get a first-ring answer instead of a ring-out, in your business name.

  3. 3

You get the same summary either way

An overflow call arrives in your inbox in the same shape as any other, so nothing is filed differently just because you were busy.

  4. 4

    Urgent overflow still reaches you

Your urgent rule applies to overflow calls too — being busy does not mean an emergency waits.

Common questions

Overflow answering, answered

How does an overflow phone answering service differ from call forwarding?

Forwarding sends the call somewhere; overflow answering means somewhere answers it properly. The second and third callers get a first-ring answer in your business name and a full intake, rather than a ring-out or a voicemail box.

Can an overflow call answering service handle several callers at once?

Yes, and that is the main reason to use one. Three simultaneous callers are three simultaneous answers, which is not something a single person covering the phone can do.

Can I use it only when my line is busy?

Yes. Forward-on-busy and forward-on-no-answer are settings on your existing line, so you decide exactly when calls reach it. Many businesses use both and answer everything they can themselves.

Do I have to change my phone number?

No. Your number stays exactly as it is — forwarding is a setting on that line, not a replacement for it.

How quickly does it pick up?

On the first ring. There is no queue, so an overflow caller is not waiting behind anybody.

Do overflow calls count differently?

No. A call counts once whether you answered it or we did, and spam is never counted at all.
