How much does an answering service cost?

Short answer: a human answering service runs about $250 to $700 a month for a small business, and AI-based services start between $20 and $50. The longer answer is that the headline price is rarely the bill, because most of this market charges by the minute — so the number you pay depends on how long your callers talk, which is the one thing you do not control.

Set your own call volume and the rate you have been quoted. Our side uses the real plan allowances and overage rates — the same ones the invoice uses.

Answerley

$99/mo

Standard, 150 calls included

Call length does not change the price. Spam is never counted.

A per-minute service

$180/mo

120 calls × 3 min × $0.50

Every extra minute is chargeable, and a longer call costs more even when it is the same job.

At 120 calls a month you would pay $81 a month less here — $972a year — and your bill would not move when a call runs long.

The unit matters more than the price

What you are actually being charged for

Every quote in this category is one of three units, and they behave completely differently once real calls start arriving.

Per minute

The most common, and the least predictable. A 6-minute call costs three times a 2-minute one for the same booking. Some per-minute plans also round up — we found half-minute increments at one of the vendors we checked — so a 2m10s call can bill as 2.5 minutes. Ask what the increment is: it is invisible in a quote and obvious on an invoice.

Per call

One call, one unit, whatever is said. Easier to forecast, and you can check it against your own phone log, which you cannot really do with minutes.

Flat monthly with an allowance

A fixed price for a set number of calls. Predictable as long as you know what happens when you go over — which is the question worth asking, because not every vendor publishes it.

Before you compare quotes

The questions that change the number

Are spam calls billed?

Most services charge for every answered call, including robocalls and telemarketers. On a typical small-business line that is a meaningful share of the volume, and it is pure waste. Ask specifically.

What is the overage rate, in writing?

Some vendors do not publish one at all, which means you find out what going over costs at the same moment you find out you went over.

Is there a minimum, or a setup fee?

Common in the human-operator tier, and it changes the effective monthly cost of a light month considerably.

How is a short call treated?

A 20-second wrong number can still be a billable unit on both per-call and per-minute plans.

Ballpark, by type

What each kind of answering service costs

Rough monthly ranges for a small business taking around 100 calls a month, based on published pricing across the market. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not as a substitute for doing the arithmetic at your own volume.

AI, flat monthly — $20 to $350

The cheapest answering service options sit here, and it is where per-call pricing is most common. A low cost answering service at $25 with 30 included calls is not automatically cheaper than $49 with 60 included: at 100 calls the overage decides it. Ours is $49, $99 and $199, which works out at $0.82, $0.66 and $0.50 a call.

AI, per minute — $29 to $99 entry, then metered

Cheap telephone answering service pricing usually means a small monthly fee plus a per-minute rate of roughly $0.25 to $0.50. Predictable only if your call lengths are, and overnight calls are typically the longest.

Human operators — $250 to $700

A live answering service cost at this tier is billed per minute or per call, often with a monthly minimum. Per-call rates of $3 to $10 are normal, which is five to ten times the AI tier for the same captured job.

Round-the-clock and after-hours cover

A 24 hour answering service cost is usually the standard rate applied to more hours, and an after hours answering service cost is the same money for the calls that arrive at the worst time. Neither costs extra here — a 3am call counts exactly like a 3pm one.

What affordable actually means

An affordable answering service for small businesses is one whose bill you can predict: flat monthly, a published overage, and no charge for robocalls. Answering service per call pricing is easier to forecast than per minute because you can check it against your own phone log.

The line items people forget

Setup fees, monthly minimums, and whether a 20-second wrong number is a billable unit. Any of the three can move a call answering service cost by more than the headline rate does.

Common questions

Answering service costs, answered

How does answering service pricing usually work?

Three ways: per minute, per call, or a flat monthly allowance. Answering service pricing is hard to compare because vendors mix these units, and because per-minute plans round — often to the next half minute — which never appears in the quote. Convert every quote to your own volume before comparing.

Is there a cheap answering service that is still worth using?

Sometimes, and sometimes not — it depends entirely on your volume, and the honest answer is that at low call counts a cheaper headline usually does win. What changes the ranking is the allowance and the overage together: a $20 plan with no included minutes and a $25 plan with 30 included calls behave completely differently at 100 calls, and some overage rates fall as you use more. Put your own numbers in the calculator above. Then check whether spam is billed, because on most plans it is, and that is the one line item you cannot forecast.

What makes an answering service affordable for a small business?

Predictability more than headline price. An affordable answering service is one whose bill you can forecast: a flat monthly fee, a published overage, and no charge for robocalls. A cheap per-minute rate that moves with how talkative your callers are is not affordable, it is just cheap on the quote.

What is the average phone answering service cost per call?

Across published pricing in this market, entry plans work out between roughly $0.25 and $1.50 per answered call for AI services, depending on the plan and whether the overage declines with volume, and $3 to $10 for human ones. Ours is $0.82 per call on Starter, $0.66 on Standard and $0.50 on Pro, with extra calls at 90¢, 75¢ and 60¢.

Does after hours answering service cost extra?

Not here. There is no night rate, no weekend rate and no holiday surcharge — a 3am call counts exactly like a 3pm one. On per-minute plans it effectively does cost more, because overnight calls tend to run longer.

How much does an answering service cost per month?

For a small business, a human answering service typically costs $250 to $700 a month, usually billed per minute with a monthly minimum. AI-based services are far cheaper: entry plans across the market run roughly $20 to $50 a month. Answerley is $49/mo for 60 answered calls, $99/mo for 150 and $199/mo for 400, or $41, $83 and $166 a month billed annually.

Is an answering service cheaper than a receptionist?

For most small businesses, considerably. A part-time receptionist is a salary, payroll tax and cover for holiday and sickness, and they answer during office hours only. An answering service is a fixed monthly cost that covers nights, weekends and holidays as well.

Why do answering services charge per minute?

Because their cost is a person's time, so minutes are what they are actually buying. The side effect is that your bill moves with how talkative your callers are. It also creates an incentive that does not point your way, and it is why rounding rules are worth reading before signing.

What is the cheapest answering service?

A headline price only tells you what an empty month costs. The allowance and the overage decide the rest, and they can reverse the ranking: a plan with a low headline and a high overage loses to a higher headline with a generous allowance somewhere between 50 and 200 calls, and some vendors reduce the overage as volume rises. There is no shortcut here — work it out at your own volume with the calculator above.

Are there setup fees or contracts?

There are none here — no setup fee, no minimum term, and you can cancel at any time. They are common enough elsewhere in this market that it is worth asking about both.

What happens if I go over my plan?

We keep answering, and extra answered calls are charged at your plan's published rate. You get an email at 80% of your allowance and again when you reach it, so it is never a surprise, and if the next plan up would be cheaper for you we say so.
