Answering service comparison
Comparing this market is harder than it should be, because vendors quote in three different units and half of them do not publish overage at all. This lays out what published pricing actually says, what the differences mean once calls start arriving, and how an answering service differs from the two things people usually weigh it against.
Type your business name and hear it answer a call in your name. No card needed.

Three different jobs
Answering service vs call center vs in-house
Answering service
Answers your line when you cannot, takes the details, and routes anything urgent to you. Priced per call, per minute or as a monthly allowance. The job is capture and triage, not resolution.
Call center
Built for volume and for handling the work end to end — support queues, outbound campaigns, scripts with decision trees. Usually priced per agent or per hour with a minimum commitment, and generally aimed at businesses with enough volume to justify dedicated staffing.
In-house receptionist
Best experience when they are there. The cost is salary plus payroll tax plus cover, and the coverage is office hours only — so the calls that arrive at 9pm, on a Sunday, or while they are at lunch still go unanswered.
The five that matter
What to check before you sign
The billing unit
Per minute, per call, or flat. This single choice determines whether your bill is predictable.
The rounding rule
If it is per minute, ask what the increment is. Where it applies, half-minute rounding adds a real percentage to every invoice and appears in no quote — we found it at one of the vendors we checked.
The published overage
If a vendor will not state it, that is the answer.
Whether spam counts
Very few exclude it. It is free money for them and pure waste for you.
What happens at the limit
Do they stop answering, auto-upgrade you, or keep going and bill the difference? All three exist in this market, and only one of them is told to you up front.
Common questions
Comparing services, answered
How do I do an answering service pricing comparison that is actually fair?
Convert every quote to the same unit at your own volume. An answering service pricing comparison based on headline prices is meaningless when one vendor bills per minute, one per call and one per caller. Take your monthly call count and typical call length, apply each vendor's rate including its rounding rule and overage, and compare the totals.
Answering service vs in-house receptionist — which is cheaper?
An in-house receptionist is salary plus payroll tax plus cover for holiday and sickness, and answers during office hours only. In an answering service vs in-house receptionist comparison the service almost always wins on cost and on hours covered; the receptionist wins on everything that needs a person in the room.
Is there a live answering service pricing comparison for small businesses specifically?
The table above is one: entry pricing, billing unit, included volume and published overage for the services that publish theirs. Small businesses are where the billing unit matters most, because a single long call moves a per-minute bill noticeably and a per-call bill not at all.
What is the difference between an answering service and a call center?
An answering service answers and triages calls you cannot take, and is priced per call or per minute. A call center handles work end to end at volume — support queues, outbound campaigns — and is usually priced per agent or per hour with a commitment. For a small business missing calls after hours, the answering service is almost always the right shape.
Is an answering service better than an in-house receptionist?
They solve different problems. A receptionist is better in the room and during office hours; an answering service covers nights, weekends and holidays at a fraction of the cost and never takes a lunch break. Many businesses use both — the receptionist during the day and the service outside it.
How do I compare answering service pricing fairly?
Convert every quote to the same unit at your own volume. Take your monthly call count and your typical call length, apply each vendor's rate including its rounding rule and its overage, and compare the totals. A headline price alone will mislead you whenever the units differ.
Which answering services do not charge for spam calls?
Very few. Most bill every answered call, robocalls included. It is worth asking directly, because on a typical small-business line it is a meaningful share of the volume.
